Talk about a dream "Buzz Session" - Michelle Obama and Oprah together at the "United State of Women" Summit held at the White House this week.
It's 43 minutes of pure, straight talking truth from a woman who has already lived so many lives, faced so much criticism, achieved so much and yet knows she has her best work ahead of her.
(On working part time) “The only thing I found out about part time is that you get paid part-time. I was cramming it all into the time and it was driving me crazy."
(On standing her ground in job negotiations) "I knew what my time and energy was worth. I could do the job, I could deliver. I wasn’t going to sell myself short."
(On prioritizing self-care) "We have to invest that time in getting to know who we are and liking who we are”.
(On positivity and community) "Surround yourself with goodness. I learned early on to get the haters out of my life. You have to surround yourself with people who lift you up. People won’t remember what other people say about you, but they will remember what you do”.
(On the haters) “The best revenge is success and good work. You just wake up every morning and be the best you you can be, and that tends to shut ‘em up."
(On figuring out her passion) "Let me wake up every day wanting to do something well. Let that speak for itself."
(On being herself) "I realized that to be authentically myself I had to do things that I authentically care about.”
(And finally..) “The work always continues. We are never done. We can never be complacent and think we’ve arrived. How are you going to be better? What are you going to do? How are you going to empower yourself with the knowledge you need to know what work needs to be done?"
Do yourself a favor, pour yourself a glass of wine, settle back and watch.
